How to Help Someone With a Drug or Alcohol Problem

Don't confront a person while the person is high or drunk.
Wait until the effects have completely worn off.

Expect to be put on the defense.
A person with a substance abuse problem will vehemently deny it.

State your intentions.
You are confronting the person out of care and concern, not blame or judgement.

State your motivations.
You are having the coversation because you care.

Be firm in your presentations.
Come prepared with specific examples of out-of control behavior.

Present your observations.
Focus on what you see happening to the person and the lives of those around him or her. Be very specific.

Express how the person's behavior makes you feel.

State why you think the person needs help.

State what you will do next.
Assist the person in getting help and/or involving others in an intervention.

Health Care Benefits

Congratulations on deciding to quit your addiction! You are ready for your first step towards recovery.

1. Now that you have decided to quit, DO NOT RETURN to the same addictive environment. Doing so is very dangerous and almost ensures relapse. You are vulnerable and need a lot of support. Surround yourself with supportive individuals.

2. Schedule an evaluation. Be completely honest.

3. Check with your insurance provider to see what treatment programs and after treatment care expenses are covered under your plan. Below are questions to ask your insurance provider. Your addiction is a serious matter and you deserve proper treatment.
a) How long is the program?
b) Do they have a treatment facility that specializes in your addiction?
c) How many patients have relapsed at the provider recommended rehab program?
d) Do they have treatment facilities out of state for which they provide coverage?

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are excellent ways to work a program without work a program withour treatment or while waiting for treatment. Many have found the strength they need though faith-based groups. Many fo these faith-based groups have assisted those needing help when they have asked. There are several web-based support groups, too. (Note: Certain expenses for drug treatment may be considered a medical tax deduction.)
